“The youth should first learn perspective, then the proportions of each object. Then he may copy from some good master, to accustom himself with fine forms. Then from nature, to confirm by practice the rules he has learned.”
 – Leonardo DaVinci

Drawing is the foundation of all visual art, and mastering the use of a pencil to express the imagination and the natural world is the fundamental skill required for any art career.

Providing a working environment in which students train under a master, Disegno Academy continues an educational tradition dating back to the Renaissance. Modeled after the ateliers of 19th century France, the focus is preparing students for college study by perfecting the core principles and necessary skills of drawing.

Unlike larger art schools, Disegno Academy is designed around intensive, one-on-one training, and offers classical drawing classes for teenagers aged 14-18. Class is limited in size - only nine students. Each student receives personal attention with access to the instructor at all times. In such an environment, the focus remains on the individual progressing at his or her own rate. All work is done directly from life, and in-depth critiques are given daily.

The curriculum is designed for all experience levels. It is comprised of exercises proceeding from simple to complex subject matter, each stressing comprehension of the structural principles of drawing. These exercises are not meant to be creative but to introduce the fundamental elements of line, shape and mass in a controlled manner. The student can thus train the eye and hand, building accuracy, confidence and mastery.

Comprehensive instruction at the student’s pace and an intimate learning environment makes Disegno Academy the finest private art instruction in the Philadelphia area.

Serious training for serious students.
